This display indicates the development of the pieces over the life span of chess. For example, originally the pawn was only allowed to move one square forward, regardless of whether or not it was the first move for that particular pawn. In addition there was no castling. The queen was not as powerful as she is today as well. The next time that I am in the museum, I will try to capture the text for each of the pieces so that we can all gain a sense of how each one of these pieces has developed over the centuries that chess has been in existence.
