Star Trek portrait with Mister Spock playing
Captain Kirk at 3 dimensional chess. My understanding
from having read several Star Trek books is the fact that there were no real
rules on how to play this version of chess. The actors were told to just
moves the pieces any way they wanted so long as they felt that it would give
the impression to anyone observing that they were really playing and analyzing
a chess game according to some sort of rules. It seems that despite Mr. Spock's
vast intelligence, Captain Kirk was the better 3 dimensional chess player.
It was from watching an episode of Star Trek where Mister Spock
played the Enterprise computer at chess that the idea of the first commercial
chess computer came into existence.
